Left top image: A romanticised 19th-century recreation of King John signing Magna Carta. Rather than signing in writing, the document would have been authenticated with the Great Seal and applied by officials rather than John himself. Left bottom image: Cotton MS. Augustus II. 106, one of four surviving exemplifications of the 1215 text of the Magna Carta Right: Text saying: Magna Carta—a charter of English liberties that occupies a unique place in the popular imagination as a symbol and a battle cry against oppression—was sealed ton June 15, 1215, at Runnymede by the River Thames, under threat of civil war, by King John. It was the first document to put into writing the principle that the king and his government was not above the law and granted every person the right to access to swift justice. It was drafted to make peace between the unpopular king and a group of rebel barons. Although no one kept their side of the bargain, it is considered to be the foundation of western democratic freedoms.
